Yoga is the science and art of self-understanding. The desire to understand and improve one’s self is the foundation of Yoga. The goal of Yoga can range from stress reduction to Self-Realization. The practice of Yoga is comprised of a system of physical and mental disciplines that can guide the practitioner to the freedom and knowledge necessary to lead a happy and healthy life.
The physical disciplines are comprised of postures and breathing exercises that work to purify and strengthen the body. The mental disciplines are comprised of meditation, contemplation and relaxation techniques that refine and perfect the mind. The body and mind continually affect one another until they are balanced and unified. Though Yoga begins with the body it ends by transcending it.
